Adventures in Michigan-Boats and Bridges

On our 4th day in Michigan we drove from Escanaba to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to the Soo Locks. The Locks consist of two canals and four locks that allow vessels of many types/sizes to safely traverse the 21-foot drop in elevation of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron. We got to watch a Canadian Steel Vessel and a small tug boat come into the locks.

After leaving the Soo Locks, we drove down to the Mackinac Bridge. The Mackinac Bridge separates Upper Michigan from Lower Michigan. The Bridge is the third largest suspension bridge. We were able to view the bridge from the viewing park. It was a great spot. We were also able to see Mackinac Island.

After leaving the Mackinac Bridge we started driving back to Escanaba. On the way back we stopped at Cut River Bridge. Cut River Bridge is a great scenic area. We hiked from the rest stop down little Lake Michigan Beach under the Bridge and than big up to the car. It was a difficult hike if you have asthma, but the view was beautiful.
